Cam chains generally need replacing between 30,000 and 50,000 klm’s. A worn cam chain will sound like a chain is being dragged over the edge of a metal bench and the sound is the chain wearing into your engines cases or head. Metal filings will eventually work their way into oil crevices etc causing major damage. Eventually the chain will break causing an engine seizure which can be threatening to both your wallet and person. There are two types of cam chains. Most pre 1980 bikes use a single row cam chain which (apart from size) is very similar in appearance to your rear drive chain. Post 1980 models tend to use a multi row or Hy-Vo cam chain. These modern cam chains usually run quieter and last longer. You can’t interchange cam chains. Our cam chains are supplied with a joining link which makes it much easier to replace. In most cases the chain we supply will be the correct length as per the factory but often the chain we supply will be too long and will require cutting down to size. Please be sure you check the length before fitting. Chains can be cut with a chain breaker, punch or grinder. The joining link will need to be hammer peened. We can also supply rocker cover gaskets or complete gasket kits for most models.
